Wear It Well: Elizabeth Taylor
3 September 2013 by Susie Stenmark
It’s been said of Elizabeth Taylor that she was so beautiful she needed no adornment. It has also been said of her that she never met a diamond she didn’t like – or maybe the outspoken character said it of herself?
From the Krupp diamond to the stunning pink Graff diamond to some of Bulgari’s best, she was the happy recipient of jeweled love tokens from her adoring husbands.

Elizabeth’s glowing skin, iconic violet eyes and glossy brunette hair formed the perfect complement to coloured gems too; she could carry off large pieces with bold shapes. She favoured Bulgari emeralds and rubies from Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, loved turquoise, coral, amethyst and of course, pearls.

Aside from the size and magnificence of her jewellery collection, what distinguishes Elizabeth Taylor as someone who wore jewellery well was the obvious joy she took in her collection and her understanding that she was merely the custodian of such beauty: “Having jewelry is a temporary gift. In truth, we ‘owners’ are just the caretakers. Nobody owns beautiful paintings. Nobody ever owns anything this beautiful. We are only the guardians.”
